Booking your San Diego photoshoot is the easy part. The part that makes people nervous is everything that comes next: what to wear, where to go, and how to act in front of a camera. The good news is that a little planning goes a long way. Here are the seven things I tell every client before their session so they show up relaxed and leave with photos they love.
1. Choose a Location That Feels Like You
The best backdrop is one that means something to you. A favorite park, a cozy cafe, your home, or the spot where you got engaged will all give you more natural photos than a place you picked just because it looked good online. Not sure where to go? Ask me. I'm happy to suggest spots that fit your style and the time of day.
2. Pick the Right Time of Day
Light changes everything. The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give soft, golden light that flatters everyone. Midday sun is harsh and creates squinting and shadows. If your schedule only allows for midday, don't worry, I can work with shade and still get beautiful results.
3. Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time
Choose clothes you feel confident and comfortable in. A few simple guidelines:
• Coordinate your colors instead of matching exactly.
• Avoid large logos and busy patterns, which pull attention away from your faces.
• Bring a second outfit if you'd like variety.
• Try everything on a day or two early, so there are no surprises.
4. Don't Skip the Small Details
Get a good night's sleep and drink plenty of water the day before. Iron or steam your clothes, and pack a few essentials: a hairbrush, lip balm, tissues, and a lint roller. Little things like these make a big difference on camera.
5. Let Go of the Pressure to Pose Perfectly
You don't need to be a model. My job is to guide you, and I'll give you simple prompts like "walk toward me" or "whisper something funny." Some of the best photos happen between poses, when you forget the camera is there and are simply being yourselves.
6. Bring Your Personality and Your People
If you have a favorite song, a pet, or a tradition that's special to you, bring it along. Details like these turn nice photos into photos that tell your story.
7. Relax and Have Fun
This matters most. When you're enjoying yourself, it shows in every frame. Take a deep breath, laugh a lot, and trust the process.
